New Painting: “Dots 3”

The next in an ongoing series of little bitty paintings:

Being temporarily (I hope) camera-less, I instead captured the image of this little painting on my flatbed scanner. An artist friend had been after me to use my scanner more. He claims scanners take vastly superior pictures of paintings over digital cameras. The downside: anything bigger than the scanner (about 8×10″) has to be scanned in pieces, and I’m just not willing to do that. But for a little bitty 5×7″ painting the scanner works great! The colors are much more accurate than my camera ever got, I have to admit. So, maybe my friend has a point.

This painting is available for $30 plus postage ($1.50 in the U.S.), and sales tax if mailing to a California address. It’s painted on a canvas panel, a thin canvas-covered board that will fit readily into any 5×7″ photo frame. To purchase, click on the button below.

New Painting: “Dots 2”

In spite of being sick for the past several days, I managed to finish another little bitty abstract dot painting. Voila!

I’ll admit to thinking a little about interstellar space while painting this one. (I’m allowed to do that: I have degrees and everything.) The “cloud” of lighter colored dots is similar to the distribution of stars in a galaxy. (For you astronomy geeks out there, I was originally thinking about a spiral seen edge-on, but then it turned more into an elliptical galaxy.) But mostly it’s an abstract painting having fun with color.

The unfortunate thing about being sick is that this one painting is pretty much all I’ve accomplished this week. Well, this and the consumption of 1.5 boxes of Kleenex and an entire bottle of DayQuil. Good news: I’m feeling much better now!

This little bitty painting is sold, but many more are still available.

New Painting: “Dots 1”

I just finished another little bitty abstract dot painting:

I’m having so much fun with these little guys! Painting all those dots is rather meditative. Of course I’ll be doing much larger paintings in this style, but these little paintings are a fun way to warm up to the bigger ones.

Unlike the Valentine painting, this one was available for sale, but is now sold. Don’t worry, there will be more!

Art for Valentine’s Day

I just finished this little painting for my sweetie for Valentine’s Day.

I wanted to give him something, but I’d been putting off going shopping. First of all, I hate shopping. I hate the consumerism of it all. And second, he doesn’t like candy. At least, not the usual sticky sweet stuff sold for Valentine’s Day.

When I realized that I was procrastinating the shopping because I hate it so much, I realized that I needed to come up with something else. Nothing extravagant. But not just a stupid card, either.

I thought about making him a card. But that still didn’t feel right. Just a card? That’s all? Even if it’s handmade, it’s still just a card. It’s not enough. But then the thought hit me: what about a little tiny painting, about the same size as a card? Yes, that felt right.

So I pulled out a little 5×7-inch canvas board and started painting. This felt right. It’s so much more personal than a storebought card. It’s a little part of me that I’m giving him.

Oh, and that thing I have about hearts? (I mentioned that I don’t like hearts in fine art in my post about the Los Angeles Art Show.) Well, I did use a heart in this painting. But it’s very subtle.

Does this mean I have to revise my bad attitude about hearts?

I'm an artist. I make paintings with dots.

I work in acrylic paint, in a couple of distinct styles: landscapes and abstracts.

Native to California, I've lived elsewhere and only recently returned to my home state. I now live in Los Angeles.

I mostly show my art in outdoor festivals in California. I also occasionally show my work in art galleries or open studio events. You can see an up-to-date list of upcoming shows on my website (click here).
