Little-Bitty Dot Painting “Dots 16”

I haven’t completed one of these little guys in a while. (I call ’em “little bitty” paintings, you can see more here.) It’s high time for a new one, I think.
“Dots 16″ by Barbara J Carter, 5×7”, acrylic on canvasboard.
The end result reminded me of a nebula (a bunch of stars or a glowing clump of interstellar gas), so I’m calling it “Nebula” as its alternate title. As per usual, it’s an experimental piece, just a way for me to work out some ideas and see what happens. The dots are nicely raised; it’s fun to run your fingertips over them.
Update: It sold quickly! You can see all my other paintings, including those still available, here.

Some of the dots look like bumps. Are they raised above the surface, or do you shade the flat dots to make them look like they’re raised? The eyes deceive, and the mind plays tricks, and things in two dimensions aren’t always what they seem.

Hi Judy! They’re all raised bumps. I’ve had people mistake the dots for thumbtacks, but they’re just paint. I use a thick fluid paint. It’s really fun to touch!

Hi,
Love the technique of the dot. How did you get them so perfect? I am an art student at a college in Namibia. Please can you advise me how u created the raised dots. Or perhaps you can have a look at this painting
http://www.vickysandersart.com/?p=372 and perhaps some one can tell me how they did these dots. Maybe its the same technique, lack of resources in Namibia.

Hi Rebecca,
Yes, it could be the same, sure looks like it. My dots are just made from the fluid acrylic paint made by the Golden Paint company. No water or medium added. Golden is an American company; you might be able to buy their paint online. Good luck!
